UK Biobank is inviting participants to help the project further – by wearing a watch-sized activity monitor for a week.
Physical activity is known to affect health in many ways, but it has been hard to measure accurately (even with detailed questionnaires). Advances in technology are changing this, and UK Biobank wants to take advantage of them. Information gathered with activity monitors will help scientists better understand how physical activity affects health.
There are no health risks associated with wearing an activity monitor. All you would need to do is wear it on your wrist for a week. It is designed to be worn 24 hours a day, whether you are working or sleeping, having a bath or shower, or playing sport. It does not matter how active you are, or if you are more or less active than usual during the week that you wear it.
So please look out for your invitation to take part in this new development. We are starting by contacting 1,000 participants by email, just to check that the system works well. Later in the year we will make contact with other participants, though it will take quite some time for us to work our way through all participants.
You will be able to easily indicate if you are happy to wear an activity monitor and we will send you one within about 2 weeks (the packet fits through a standard letterbox, so there is no need to wait in).
All you will need to do is put it on when it arrives. The activity monitor turns itself on and off automatically. After 7 days you will just need to return it to us in the pre-paid envelope provided.
Further information and instructions will come with the activity monitor, but they are also available by visiting our activity monitor web pages , or by calling us on 0800-0-276-276 (Mon-Sat; 8am to 7pm).
If you have received your email invitation asking you if you would help by wearing an activity monitor, you can confirm your wishes by clicking the ‘confirmation’ button in in the email, or by phoning the UK Biobank Participant Resource Centre on 0800 0 276 276 (8am-7pm Monday-Saturday).
