Invitation to attend a repeat assessment visit
UK Biobank is inviting participants to undergo a second assessment. We have started this process in the Manchester area, where the first participants were recruited six years ago. So if you live in Manchester or the north west, please do look out for your invitation. We would very much appreciate your help, once again, in work to improve the health of future generations.
Why have I been invited?
A lot has been achieved since UK Biobank began to recruit participants in Manchester in 2006:
- More than 500,000 people have joined the project (thank you to everyone who has taken part)
- Information about ongoing health is being obtained by linkage with medical records
- The resource is now being made available to approved researchers
By attending a repeat assessment you will help UK Biobank improve this resource for health research.
What is involved?
A repeat assessment visit will last between 2-3 hours. Participants will be asked again to answer questions about their health and lifestyle (even though the answers may not have changed since the first visit). We will take some standard physical measurements (including some that may not have been done at the initial assessment), and we will ask for donations of blood, urine and saliva. The visit is not a health check, but participants would receive some results at the end of it. An invitation to take part is not based on any information already collected about participants.
More information is available in our Repeat Assessment Information Leaflet, or by calling our Participant Resource Centre on 0800 0 276 276 (free from most UK land lines) or 02920 765597, 8am-7pm Monday to Saturday.
We realise that, for some people, attending may involve travelling further than for the initial assessment. However, parking at the assessment centre is easy, taxi transfers are available from Stockport train station (look out for details in your confirmation letter) and travel expenses will be reimbursed if required. Refreshments (such as salads, sandwiches, tea and coffee) will be available.
Confirming your provisional appointment
We hope you do not mind that we have made a provisional appointment for you, which can be changed or cancelled. Attendance is, of course, entirely voluntary. Confirming or cancelling an appointment can be done by replying to the invitation email you will be sent or calling UK Biobank on 0800 0 276 276 (free from most UK land lines) or 02920 765597, 8am-7pm Monday to Saturday. You can also change your appointment by calling this number.
We should like you to attend whether you are in good health or have health problems, and whether you have a disability or may require help. You can still take part even if you are not able to undergo some of the physical measurements. The assessment centre is on the ground floor, very close to parking. If you need extra help to attend, or want to alert us to anything beforehand, please telephone 0800 0 276 276 (free from most UK land lines) or 02920 765597, 8am-7pm Monday to Saturday. You can also speak to us on a Sunday by dialling the same number, but we are unable to confirm, cancel or change appointments on that day.
See the freezer?
The repeat assessment centre has been set up in our coordinating centre in Stockport, where samples of blood are processed and stored. You are able to visit the state-of-the-art robotics-led archive facility – the giant freezer that stores samples at very cold temperature – if you wish.
