Sometimes it’s easier to explore what you should not do when designing landing pages rather than what you should do.

This can help guide the look more powerfully and of course every pages will depend on the content to shape how it looks.

  • Do not put a slab with a background colour immediately on the page, although it will work, it’s better to leave some ‘breathing space’ after the header area before introducing a slab of content. Use this immediate area for introductory text. It’s perfectly fine to use a Slab with no background to add padding here.
  • Do not style multiple blocks of text with the intro or Intro XL styles – this should just be reserved for making initial impact or giving emphasis to specific pieces of text.
  • Do not use Header Levels just to put large, bold text on the page – these are purely for document structure, and should be used carefully.
  • Do not use more than occasional pink (secondary/secondary tint) box components or slabs – reserve these for very important information e.g. security of for calls to actions areas on very information rich pages. See colour usage guide
  • Do not put words on images, some logos may be ok. Better to put logos as separate images into documents than trying to use integrated into header banners images etc.
  • Do not put slabs of the same/very similar background color directly after each other (add margin if you need to to separate them slightly)
  • On key content/landing pages it’s better not to use the default narrow centred ‘line length’ document width, as the page will have more impact if content is divided into slabs or rows with 2 column blocks. Although the standard document width is fine for publications, news articles, event details etc. Landing pages should be more impactful.
