Geriatric syndromes among middle-aged and older adults
Approved Research ID: 104895

Lay summary
This research project aims to investigate the impact of geriatric syndromes on the health of middle-aged and older adults. Geriatric syndromes are common conditions that affect older adults, such as frailty, falls, cognitive impairment, and depression. These conditions can have a significant impact on quality of life, and it is important to understand the factors that contribute to their development and progression in order to develop effective prevention and intervention strategies.
We will conduct a secondary data analysis of the UK Biobank cohort, a large study that includes detailed data on lifestyle, health, and genetic factors from over 500,000 individuals. We will use established definitions and criteria to identify geriatric syndromes and explore their impact on health outcomes, such as disability, hospitalization, institutionalization, and mortality. We will also investigate the risk and protective factors associated with geriatric syndromes, including demographic, lifestyle, health, and genetic factors, and explore the underlying mechanisms that drive their progression over time.
The project duration is expected to be three to four years, and the findings will have important public health implications. By identifying the factors that contribute to the development and progression of geriatric syndromes, this research will inform the development of targeted prevention and intervention strategies to improve the health outcomes and quality of life of middle-aged and older adults. This is particularly important given the increasing number of older adults in the population and the associated burden on healthcare systems. Ultimately, this research will contribute to the goal of promoting healthy aging and reducing the impact of geriatric syndromes on individuals and society as a whole.
