Integrated analysis and validation of complex brain-related genetic and genomic studies

Principal Investigator: Dr Patrick May
Approved Research ID: 73507
Approval date: December 14th 2022

Lay summary

The study will help to better understand the genetic basis of complex brain diseases like epilepsy, Alzheimer disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) by analyzing and integrating rare and common genetic variation and their contribution to disease risk and disease progression. For complex brain diseases only large numbers of individuals together with detailed descriptions of the disease and its symptoms will enable the detection of the underlying genetic architecture, that's why we want to use the large UK Biobank resource as an additional data and validation source for our ongoing studies on epilepsy, AD and PD genetics. Analyzing and harmonization of the UK Biobank data with existing in-house genetic, genomic and clinical data requires a significant amount of resources and effort. Therefore we will need 36 months to run the project.
