Lay summary
Cardiovascular surgery is a significant burden that is affected by many factors. The most important include obesity and the presence of underlying comorbidities. For example, diabetic, underweight, or morbidly obese patients are more likely to suffer postoperative complications. Our research identified several genes and small molecules whose expression changes in obesity or when comorbidities are present. These include genes controlling protein synthesis, heart muscle contraction and energy production. These genes could be potential therapeutic targets. Using extensive UKBiobank data, we will investigate genetic variants controlling the expression of the genes of interest and identify any functional connection with clinical outcomes that affect patients' lives.
