Lay summary

Patients suffering from heart failure are at risk of developing ventricular tachycardia (abnormally and persistent fast beating of the heart) which is responsible for about 80% of sudden cardiac deaths.

Our collaborative project focuses on electrocardiographic imaging: A method to visualise the electrical signals of the heart on the heart surface. In our subproject, we are examining MRI image video sequences to auto-detect compartments of the heart and their geometry. We furthermore aim to develop patient-specific 4D models to characterise their heart movement over time. Those models are then used to find similarities and differences in heartbeats across patients and can help clinicians and inform them which patients are possibly at risk of developing ventricular tachycardia. Moreover, our models provide clinicians with a visualisation of the electrical and mechanical heart activity. This supports them in making profound decisions regarding patients' cardiac conditions and possible treatments.
