Lay summary
Individuals with a chronic and/or age-related disease, like multiple sclerosis, or Alzheimer's disease, are at higher risk for comorbidities compared to people without the disease. These patients tend to have poor outcomes, such as lower quality of life and increased risk of death. Comorbidities are also underdiagnosed and under-treated in people. Some of these comorbidities are also linked with more severe cognitive impairments. The reasons for this are unknown, but it may be related to genetics. We want to improve the identification of comorbidities and outcomes in those with a chronic and/or age-associated disease by studying genetic factors related to comorbidities. Many genetic factors play a role in comorbidities, through various mechanisms of action. Together, they are summarized by "genetic scores". The project will take around 4 years to complete. We hope to help people with a chronic and age-related diseases by identifying those who might be at high risk for comorbidity or very likely to have cognitive impairment. The potential clinical applications are that by understanding if the genetic scores are associated with a comorbidity or with a poor outcome, we could use these genetic scores as a clinical test to improve the identification of comorbidities or of a poor outcome, leading to earlier treatment, thereby improving health outcomes for those with chronic or age-related diseases.
