Mortality of ethnic minority groups in the UK: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Principal Investigator: Dr Saman Khalatbari Soltani
Approved Research ID: 91543
Approval date: June 27th 2023

Lay summary

Growing ethnic diversity in the UK has made it increasingly important to examine differences in health by ethnicity. Despite a lot of past research on differences in rates of death between ethnic groups in the UK, we are still unclear what differences exist and which groups are most disadvantaged. In addition, most past research has compared rates of death between migrants and non-migrants with much less research on UK-born ethnic minority individuals. This study will systematically collect together past published and unpublished research on differences in rates of death between ethnic groups in the UK. The quality of different studies will be compared and the results for each ethnic group will be combined to provide a summary estimate of risk of mortality in specific ethnic minority groups compared to the White UK-born population. This systematic review will help provide clarity on health inequalities in terms of mortality in the UK and provide guidance for policies promoting health equity.
