Lay summary
Scientific rationale: Cognitive impairment, dementia, and diabetes have become major public health challenges with serious health risks. Several extensive cohort studies have shown that compared with healthy controls, patients with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes have a significantly increased risk of developing cognitive impairment and various dementias. Risk factors such as genetic factors' role in early prevention and optimal treatment among people with different blood glucose levels still need further investigation. Since drug treatment is rare and early screening is difficult, identifying modifiable risk factors and timely targeted intervention can prevent or delay cognitive decline and improve quality of life.
Aims: In this study, we aim to develop a machine-learning-based novel method used by researchers and clinicians to help predict cognitive disorders like dementia in patients with hyperglycemia (prediabetes and type 2 diabetes). Our study further aims to the personalized treatment of this specific population towards optimal treatment.
Project duration: The duration of the project will be for 36 months.
Public health impact: The development of these novel methods can lead to early detection and improved management/optimal treatment of cognitive disorders in people with hyperglycemia. Our study will help implement better prevention strategies and improve quality of life!
