Study of risk and prognostic factors affecting diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue

Principal Investigator: Professor Jun Lyu
Approved Research ID: 206581
Approval date: April 30th 2024

Lay summary

Aims:

Our research focuses on understanding the factors influencing diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases and their prognosis, with the aim of investigating the relationship between influencing factors (including biological behavior, lifestyle, environmental factors, biochemical markers, plasma metabolites, and genetic factors) and the onset and progression of skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases. The objective is to identify key factors affecting these diseases and to better predict patient outcomes.

Scientific rationale:

Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue have long been significant public health challenges worldwide, characterized not only by high incidence and mortality rates but also by substantial economic burdens on society. Despite increasing knowledge about these conditions and considerable progress in research on certain diseases, the influencing factors, pathogenesis, and prognosis of these afflictions remain incompletely understood. Our proposal aims to utilize the high-quality data from the UK Biobank to analyze the risk factors and prognostic outcomes associated with skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases, thereby identifying pertinent risk factors. By recognizing these elements, we hope to enhance our understanding of the pathogenesis of skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases and contribute to the development of more effective prevention and treatment strategies. Additionally, we plan to bridge current knowledge gaps by applying advanced analytical methods to comprehensive datasets.

Project duration:

This project is expected to last for 36 months.

Public health impact:

By identifying the risk factors associated with the onset of skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases, this research aims to formulate public health policies for the prevention of these conditions, thereby helping to mitigate their incidence and enhance the quality of life. Additionally, through analyzing prognosis and the factors influencing it, guidance can be provided for clinical decision-making in disease treatment plans, aiming to reduce mortality and morbidity rates, prolong patient survival, and alleviate the economic burden on society. Ultimately, by strengthening disease management and prevention strategies, this research endeavors to make a substantial contribution to public health and benefit patients.
