The effects of oestradiol and testosterone levels on mental health and chronic pain in women during the menopause
Lay summary
The aim of this research is to understand the factors that affect mood and pain symptoms in peri-menopausal women aged 40-60. In this study, we will look at the effects of the sex hormones oestradiol and testosterone, changes in brain volume, and genetic factors on the mental health in peri-menopausal women.
Women typically have their menopause between the age of 40 and 60. This is accompanied by hormonal changes in the body, such as a decrease in oestradiol levels. Studies suggest that these changes are associated with increased risk of depression and perceived pain. At present, we do not know what drives these changes.
In this study, we will investigate the relationship of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and pain, with sex hormone levels (oestradiol and testosterone), regional brain volumes and genetics in women during and after the menopause. We hope that the results from this study will help us understand and predict depression in peri-menopausal women better.
