The major lifestyle, environmental and genetic determinants of stroke and its pathological types and subtypes

Stroke is the second most common cause of death worldwide and a major global cause of severe disability. The three main pathological types (ischaemic stroke, intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage) and their subtypes are likely to be caused by a combination of genetic and non-genetic lifestyle and environmental exposures, with individually modest effects and complex interactions.

The aims of this proposal are to: 1) establish reliably the major lifestyle, environmental and genetic determinants of stroke and its pathological types and subtypes; 2) improve understanding of the different causal pathways for pathological types and subtypes of stroke; 3) investigate genetic and environmental associations with unruptured intracranial aneurysms, which are strongly associated with a stroke subtype - subarachnoid haemorrhage.
