Approved Research

Validation of a risk prediction model for breast cancer.

Principal Investigator: Dr Stephane Ragusa
Approved Research ID: 69901
Approval date: February 1st 2021

Lay summary

The purpose of the projet is to decrease the mortality of breast cancer.

This disease is easy to cure when detected early but life expectancy is under 5 years with a metastatic breast cancer.

Then the idea is to identify high risk women in the general population and propose them an earlier and more frequent screening. For example, instead of a mammography every 3 years after 50y, they could benefit from mammography at 40y with a frequency every year or every 2 years.

The purpose of this project is to test different risk model to measure the probability of breast cancer and their predictive accuracy on UKBiobank. The predictive parameters will include age, family history, previous breast biopsy, genomic data etc...

The duration expected of the project is 6 months.

The health impact can be huge since there is 12 000 deaths/y from breast cancer in UK. With an earlier identification of high risk women and future cases, this number could be largely decreased.
