UK Biobank is asking participants and some of their relatives to help undertake urgent research into the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
Thanks to your participation and the data that it already holds about you, UK Biobank is at the forefront of health research and is in a unique position to enable scientists to carry out ground-breaking research into the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we could do much more with your help.
We are inviting a sample of UK Biobank participants to register to take part in a new study to understand previous coronavirus infection in the UK. Of those who express an interest in participating a nationally representative group of 20,000 UK Biobank participants, aswell as their adult children and grandchildren will be selected to take part. If you have not received an invite it is still possible to volunteer your interest in this study selecting the “coronavirus research” button on the participant website: https://biobank.ctsu.ox.ac.uk/members/members.cgi
Over the next few months, we would like to collect blood samples and information from those participating. This will provide researchers with vital data about the extent of previous infection in different regions across the UK and help in managing the COVID-19 pandemic and a safe return to normal life.
Taking part is, of course, entirely voluntary. As we need to obtain samples from a nationally representative group of people, it is possible that we won’t be able to include everyone who offers to take part. When we know who is willing to take part, we will then be able to let you know whether we would need your participation in this project.
