Research Questions:
1!What is the prevalence and incidence of depression among gout patients?
2!What are the potential mechanisms underlying the association between gout and depression, particularly the role of inflammation?
3!What modifiable factors may influence the risk of depression in gout patients?
4!How does depression impact gout management and outcomes?
Objectives:
1!Assess the prevalence and incidence of depression among gout patients using the UK Biobank data.
2!Investigate the potential mechanisms linking gout and depression, with a specific emphasis on the role of inflammation, utilizing mediation analysis.
3!Identify modifiable factors, such as lifestyle and demographic variables, that may influence the risk of depression in gout patients through subgroup and interaction analyses.
4!Explore the impact of depression on gout management and outcomes, including adherence to urate-lowering therapy, disease activity, and quality of life.
Scientific Rationale:
Gout is a painful inflammatory arthritis with a rising prevalence and suboptimal management. Depression is a common but underrecognized comorbidity in gout patients, potentially exacerbated by inflammation. Existing literature suggests a positive association between gout and depression, yet the epidemiological characteristics, mechanisms, and impact of depression on gout management and outcomes remain poorly understood. This research aims to fill these gaps by comprehensively exploring the relationship between gout and depression, and the role of inflammation in this association. By using the UK Biobank data, this study will provide valuable insights into the burden of mental health comorbidities in chronic diseases and inform the development of targeted interventions to improve patient health and quality of life.
