This research project focuses on the increasing global issue of neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic disorders, particularly in the aging population. Studies suggest a link between metabolic issues and diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, with the possibility that one may worsen the other. Animal studies have hinted at genetic factors, oxidative stress, and gut health playing a role in this interaction.
To dig deeper, we plan to use the extensive data from the UK Biobank, including information about diseases, genes, and images. Our goals include understanding the relationship between neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic disorders, identifying important genetic factors, and exploring how these conditions affect the brain.
This project could lead to crucial insights into preventing and treating these debilitating diseases. By studying a large cohort of participants, the researchers aim to uncover associations, estimate risks, and explore genetic and brain-related aspects of these conditions. Overall, the project strives to enhance our understanding and pave the way for innovative therapeutic approaches.
