Critical illness may be caused by outbreaks such as Covid-19, or by sepsis, or other injuries such as burns or pancreatitis. Our work in the GenOMICC and ISARIC4C projects has shown, during Covid-19, that genetic discoveries can point directly to effective new treatments for disease. We will use the UK Biobank resource to better understand the mechanisms underlying critical illness, and susceptibility to infection. Using the unique outbreak data analysis platform (ODAP) we will link human and viral genomes, and other data, to better understand the molecular mechanisms of disease.
