In today’s modern society, poor sleep is too common. Despite its widespread nature, we have a limited understanding of what causes some individuals to not sleep well. Improving sleep quality is important, as poor sleep is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and neurodegenerative disorders. In this project, we will understand if there are genetic reasons that underlie sleep problems. Over the next three years, we will understand if genetic differences cause sleep difficulties. We will also understand if genetic differences in genes known to be involved in sleep might increase risk of other health conditions. These studies will provide deeper understanding of what causes sleep dysfunction and pave the way for personalized treatments.
