What to expect when applying
-
Before you apply
Begin with some self reflection; what are your key strengths, experiences and interests? What are your passions and what are your desired career goals and next steps? You should also research UK Biobank in order to bring discussion points at the interview stage.
-
Apply
Do you think you’d be a good fit for a role at UK Biobank? Then it’s time to apply. Submit your online application and expect a response within a few business days.
We want to give every applicant the chance to shine, so please ensure that you include any special requirements or reasonable adjustments that you feel we may need to take into consideration. Include this in the questions section of your application or at any point during the interview process.

Interview
All candidates that are being considered for a role will be offered an initial telephone interview with one of our recruiters. This is a short discussion where we will discuss what you know about UK Biobank (so ensure to do your research!) and provides you with the opportunity to gain further insights into the role and team for us to discuss your skills match.
Those progressing from this stage will be invited to a first stage interview with the hiring manager. The process differs from team to team, but the same basic principles apply. We’ll want you to showcase your most recent and relevant experiences to help our recruiters get to know your skills and strengths.
We use a mix of technical and behavioural questions to assess your skills for our roles. For a technical interview, we may ask you to complete a task or go into detail about your technical skills related to the role. For example, where specific platforms or systems are a prerequisite for the role.
In a behavioural question, we will ask you to provide specific examples from your current or previous jobs that demonstrate how you behave in certain situations. We’ll analyse your answers to predict how you would perform in the job applied for. These may take place in person or remotely via video call. There may also be more than one interview stage; more information on which will be shared with you during your application process.

The outcome
If you’re successful at your interview, you’ll get a phone call from a member of the Talent Acquisition team to talk you through your job offer. If you verbally accept our offer we’ll send you an e-offer letter, and once you’ve accepted this we’ll be able to process your offer and do any necessary pre-employment checks, after which your UK Biobank journey will begin!
If you’re joining us you will be required to provide proof of Right to Work in the UK, a basic (or enhanced for certain roles) DBS check and the offer is also subject to two satisfactory references.
If you’re not successful in your interview we’ll provide you with constructive feedback should you request it. We hope this feedback will help you to prepare for future assessments at UK Biobank and other organisations, and we strongly recommend all candidates request feedback if they are unsuccessful at interview.
Register interest
If you cannot find a role which best suits your skills right now, please register your interest. You will be asked to add a short personal summary in which we recommend you outline your skills, interests and experience. This can help us find the right roles for you, should they come available, in the future.
You can also add what specific areas of UK Biobank and locations are of interest to you. However, if you are unsure, you do not need to complete this area.
